NBN add new premises to Fixed Wireless rollout map

The National Broadband Network (nbn®) have announced over 72,800 new premises to be added to the fixed wireless existing rollout footprint.
Fiona Nash, Minister for regional communications, was quoted in a statement by ITNews saying that fixed wireless will “serve up to six per cent of Australians”.
The six per cent figure as stated by Nash is yet to be conclusive, as the nbn® is due to release its revised corporate plan in the coming weeks.
In last week’s re-calculation, it was found that the total premises under the fixed wireless footprint were 11.2 million, as numbers fell from the original total of 11.9 million.
With the nbn®’s multiple technology approach in deploying broadband across Australia, the majority of premises upon completion will have fixed line fibre to the node (FTTN) connections, while fixed wireless is a main driver of the nbn’s push for regional and rural connectivity.
The nbn® has a history of reviewing technologies under an area’s footprint prior to the infrastructure build. Further studies determine the broadband technology an area will receive, basing on geographic features, cost-efficiency, and the adjacent Point of Interconnect (POI) from neighbouring towns, who may be already connected or due to be switched on to the nbn®.
In a recent report by ITNews, 62 towns originally planned for FTTN were switched under the footprint of the fixed wireless coverage.

Earlier this year, the nbn® revealed that the fixed wireless platform will be receiving a speed upgrade of up to 100/40 Mbps, starting in 2018.
