Can you imagine connecting to the Internet, browsing at speeds of up to 1Gbps, far from any harmful waves to the human body? We may not be as far from this technology as you may think because this is exactly what Li-Fi has to offer.
Have you heard of Li-Fi? It’s technology that’s currently in its development phase. It stands for Light Fidelity and offers wireless communication based on light spectrum usage. In our feature last November, we discussed the benefits and how Li-Fi can surpass Wi-Fi.
What does the future hold for Li-Fi?
As a safe technology, the advantages of Li-Fi extend beyond connectivity and into healthcare. Because it does not emit radio waves, it is not harmful to human health in the long term.
In addition, more users will be able to connect at the same time thanks to the Li-Fi’s huge spectrum, which is 10,000 times larger compared to Wi-Fi. But since light cannot pass through walls, automatic connection between rooms will not be possible, potentially cutting down piracy rates from outside sources.
What about speed?
Li-Fi has a lot of potential in the speed department, possibly achieving speeds of up to 1Gbps. That’s faster than the latest (802.11ac) Wi-Fi standard. Oxford University researchers in the UK successfully achieved speeds of 224Gbps, but while it is a record speed, it’s highly unlikely for it to become the norm inside homes.
Meanwhile in France, specialist companies Lucibel and Oledcomm have already carried out a number of Li-Fi connection trials – primarily in the business setting, while Estonian startup Velmenni has commenced experiments in homes.
