Internet of Things Applied to Aquatic Agriculture

Oyster harvesting company Barilla Bay Oysters were reported to have lost about 70 percent of its harvest due to the disease back in February, essentially crippling its operations.
Today, measuring the amount of rainfall that happened in an area still relies on guesswork, which results in inaccurate results, therefore compromising the quality of the water and the oysters.
If the marine agriculture industry can’t accurately measure the quality of the water and the oysters, then it can’t sell the oysters at the risk of endangering the health of the consumers, but they also don’t want to lose $120,000 a day – this is where the Internet of Things come in.
The Yield, a company specialising in agricultural technology is working with Microsoft, Intel and Bosch to develop the IoT technology to measure the effect of nature on oyster yields. The company is also working with the Tasmanian government and the oyster farmers in the state’s estuaries.
They aim to implement a new system that uses in-estuary sensors, cloud computing and machine learning, and will relay data from the sensors via Intel’s gateway to Bosch’s ProSyst software where it will be ingested into Microsoft’s IoT hub in the Azure cloud, alongside the national weather data – talk about collaboration!
When this plan kicks in, it will bring good news for the farmers relying on the oyster industry and all of these will be made possible thanks to the new satellite internet provided by the National Broadband Network that will give aquatic farmers the vital access to internet to power their internet connected monitoring systems.
