1300 Fibre nodes to commence construction trial
October 19, 2014 11:07 pmNBN Co announced the new phase of the construction trials that aim to bring the national broadband network to 200,000 residential and business properties in NSW and Queensland.
The FTTN (Fibre-to-the-node), merging fibre optic cables with Telstra’s copper lines, are set to be laid out in some 140 suburbs to make fast broadband available to homes and offices in these areas, NBN Co stated today.
In an interview, NBN Co Chief Customer Officer John Simon said that this new phase of the construction trials means more than 200,000 Australian homes and businesses will be able to make use of fast and reliable broadband much earlier than originally expected, after previously stating that these areas were not to receive NBN for at least another 12 months.
“The early experiences of consumers and businesses on our trials demonstrate that existing technologies are capable of playing a vital role in delivering the NBN quicker, more efficiently, and more cost-effectively for all Australians,” Simon said.
The NBN is expected to cover a total of 155,000 in 99 suburbs all through Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast, and Newcastle, with the coverage extending further to 89,500 locations in the Queensland regions of Wide Bay Burnett, Greater Brisbane, and Moreton Bay.
The company announced the commencement of NBN construction in and around Belmont in NSW, with other areas already prepped for construction as well.
NBN services from phone and Internet providers are made available to residents and business owners 12 months after the beginning of construction, and as the NBN rollout begins to take momentum, with over 950,000 Australian homes and business aligned with the network expansion preparations, more and more people are soon going to enjoy fast broadband.
Currently, there are more than 250,000 homes and business already connected to the NBN.
